xpt power car at goulburn

At Goulburn station this afternoon (27/12/97) I noticed an XPT power car
that was "running light", that is nothing attached.

I watched it reverse out to the second siding south of the platform to let
the down Canberra Xplorer through. It then moved back to the platform before
heading back towards Sydney.

Does anyone know why the XPT power car was there without it's train?

Just curious.
