Which is why most long distance freight needs to be transferred to rail,
because its much more fuel efficient.

The most promising areas for converting to gas (At the moment) are urban
vehicles making frequent stops like buses and garbage trucks, but small to
medium sized trucks operating over shortish distances are also very
suitable.
There also needs to be more research into gas and hydrogen as alternative
fuels too. Oil will only get scarcer.
