Agree with the posts about curvature and grades prior to today

1 chain=22 yards~20.1m

Mainline 10chain = "normal minimum"
Mainline 8 chain = special circumstances
    at Zig-zag I have "heard" that D57 class were banned from passing on the
down/up 8 chain curve due to cylinder dimensions, and needed a staff to be
in the section, irrespective of 2 tracks. Can anyone confirm?

Branchline normal minimum is/was 8 chain e.g. Bombala line

Oberon, Batlow branches had 4.5 chain curves. Dorrigo? 19 class steamers ran
all three branches with Baldwin bogie tenders rather than fwb 6 wheelers.

I was on the 45 class tour to Oberon, in the second half of the train, the
bit that broke away going up Snake Gully. Excellent demo of failsafe of
Westinghouse brakes.

The problem was that the 45 class could not transition from full series to
series parallel. It went from full series to parallel in one bang (5mph to
10 mph?) and the link coupling on the vintage pullman set gave in.


Steepest grades on Kenny Hill (Branch) 1-18/19 , City underground 1-30, Blue
Mtns 1-31 for a couple of short bits. Lots of 1 in 25 on Batlow and Oberon.

The main question, of course, is the grade "compensated" for the combined
effects of curve and grade, or just a measure of grade. The curve and
gradient diagram book quotes either one or the other but not both. What is
the formula for converting an uncompensated grade to a compensated grade?

Cuttings Colo is reputedly, but some of the cuttings in the ratholes
approaching Lithgow look awful deep to me.

Embankments. Dunno, but the Tarana - Bathurst section has some impressive
embankments up on steep hilllsides such that its hard to tell when
embankment stops and hillside starts. See Hurst's wesite for some impressive
