Seats on sleek new trains were promised to rail commuters over the next
four years as Premier Bob Carr confirmed the Parramatta Rail Link had
been shrunk due to rising costs. Mr Carr announced a doubling of State
Rail's new train program, boosting it from an initial 81 millennium
carriages to 181. The additional 100 car riages will be made up of 60
suburban carriages and 40 intercity variants, altogether costing $270
million.
