The other problem with the Sydney-Melb XPT is it confuses too many markets.
It is really an all-stops local train in NSW that happens to run through to
Melbourne. Last time I took it I was next to two girls going to Wagga Wagga
who announced that there was no need to try to sleep, so they'd talk all
night. And they did.

There really needs to be a proper overnight express that doesn't stop
between Seymour and Goulburn. It would particularly appeal to all those
people travelling Mel-Syd who go up the night before and stay in a hotel if
they have a 9 am appointment (to avoid a revoltingly early morning and
delays at Sydney Airport).
