Melbourne M>Train and Connex Patrollers

I was at Flinders station about two weeks ago on a saturday night, it was a
Moomba night so that platforms were obviously busier than usual at 11:00 at
night. As i was boarding a Broadmeadows bound train, when a massive gang
fight broke out, near the front esculators on Platforms 4 and 5. There was
probably about 16 people in the fight. About 4 Police came running from
further down the platform, and four M>Train Security men came to help break
it up too. But they were pretty much useless, as the people in the fight had
knives.
I was just wondering, is there talk of giving these gaurds, who really cant
do jack all, some defensive weapons, such as battons or capsicum spray and
also is this a regular occurance.
