How long would it take the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide
commuter train systems to do 1 billion journeys? Note that the 3 million a
day in London does not include overground trains.
LONDON (Reuters) - At least one London Underground passenger was delayed
during rush hour on Wednesday -- but for once, not by the trains.
Commuter Anna Angeli was stopped by staff at East Finchley station in north
London at 8:15 a.m. after becoming the billionth person to travel on London's
"Tube" in the last year.
The occasion came 12 hours before London Underground workers were due to begin
a 24-hour strike, plunging the capital's transport systems into chaos and
bringing misery to hundreds of thousands of commuters.
A London Underground spokesman said an average of three million people
traveled on the Tube every day -- 30 percent more than four years ago.
Angeli was presented with a card allowing unlimited travel on the underground
for a year as well as a 500 pound ($700) travel voucher to help her escape
London's transport woes.
