I was wondering that too. I remember, as a kid in the Eighties, watching a
television doco about the Indian-Pacific and the doco showed that there was
an electric loco from Sydney Central to Lithgow, and diesel from there
onwards. They did give a reason for this, but I forget what it was. It
might have been for faster acceleration or more torque going up steep
gradients in the Blue Mountains or something.
