| The French have a system called 'versement' or something like that. It is
a
| charge on employers like a payroll tax, IIRC up to 2.5% in Paris and the
| regions can set their own rate up to 1.5%.

Very different (and better) than a state government trying to do the
impossible and tax Sydney Metrop residents.

| All the funds so collected are spent on public transport. An employer can
| opt-out by buying their employees' transit tickets. Hence the French are
| not short of a franc for the new additions to Paris Metro and the new LRT
| (tram, trolley bus and guided rubber tyred tram thingies) systems being
| introduced in both Paris and the regional cities.
|
| Here we have GST thrust on the workers while the payroll tax system is
being
| dismantled!

Dismantled? Hardly. Reduced from 6.2% to 6% with no indexation of the
threshold in 6 years.
