Certainly through all my childhood, the Market Street and Main Street
kerbs to the north of the railway station were terminating bus stops for
buses to North Box Hill, Doncaster, Templestowe, Balwyn, East Kew etc
etc, while there was a bus parking area on the south side of the station
where buses to places as far away as Mordialloc terminated.

The buses ran there to feed / pick up passengers to and from the trains.
Box Hill was the busiest station in Melbourne outside Flinders Street.

It sure looked like a transport interchange to me.
