Ironic considering the Kiwi is a flightless bird.  But yes apparently
there was some bloke in NZ who achieved a fairly limited and somewhat
out of control powered flight a matter of days before the Wright
brothers - I think he might have pranged too.  I'll see if I can dig up
the references to it.

Again it depends on your definition of powered flight.
