I don't know if the National Trust was involved with the grand union, but I
certainly remember a story in the local paper (I live about 2km from
Balaclava Junction) with Alan Brown saying it would be retained for heritage
reasons.

By my calculations, every curve except the N to E pair is used, anyway.
