Train fare pledge dumped

Melbourne's private transport companies will bring back the cheap
fares scrapped earlier this week after a public outcry prompted the
Victorian Government to intervene.

Transport Minister Peter Batchelor said today the government had
negotiated with the companies to immediately reintroduce the family,
group travel and other fares that were scrapped on January 1.

The tickets reinstated are the Group Get-A-Bout, Off-Peak Saver,
Family Daily, Pre-Paid Travel Authority and the Met Delegate Card.

Connex and Bayside Trains have agreed to reintroduce the tickets until
alternative tickets which they planned to introduce later this year
became available, Mr Batchelor said in a statement.
