Fare evasion on trams has ballooned into a significant problem since
conductors fell victim to economic rationalism a few years ago. The tram
system's private operators admit the rate is about 9 per cent, but there are
suspicions the figure is much higher.
Last Wednesday, Sunday Age reporters spent the day travelling on trams
throughout Melbourne to gauge whether fare evasion really is rampant.
