They has bene the case for quite while now in NSW with replacement
point work, hence a lot of the "simplification" in layouts that has
occurred over the past decade or so as pointwork has become due for
replacement.

Except for the "special work" that couldn't.  There is a limit to what
you can achieve with standardised parts, especially if space is at a
premium, as every model railroader quickly learns.
