Re: NT/Alice Springs Question

Yes the former 3'6" mainline from MacDonnell siding
(9.5 Kms south of Alice) is still in place as far as
Ewaninga siding (33 Kms from Alice).

The Ghan Preservation Society runs trains without an
NSU to the site of a WW2 siding known as Mt Ertwa about
one third the distance to Ewaninga which was
established to service the then new WW2 military
airport now known as the Alice Springs Airport.

The original crossing loop was torn up after the War
and the Ghan Preservation Society have laid a short
crossing loop on the former site to enable their QR
shunter and the "very" occasional run with an ex WAGR W
class steam loco to turn around their trains.
