Eveleigh Carriage Works = 400 flats

In Tuesday's (April 24, 2001) Sydney Morning Herald on page 5 there was
an article on the proposed redevelopment of Eveleigh Carriage Works. The
"rail museum" will be relegated to the Paint Shop, and there will be 400
flats (the term they use is 'apartments') built on part of the site.

I got the impression from attending the public open days that the public
was in support of heritage use of the whole site, with a working museum,
not a static one relegated to one of the smaller buildings. Haven't
lessons been learnt from the abortion that is the Technology Park and
its adjoining blocks of Alexandria Yard flats?

Cynics would suggest that minds were made up well before the public
consultation, and that the "museum" is a token pleaser to shut up the
critics. I could be wrong, though. :-)
