Trams used to operate in the reverse direction from what they do now.  The
grades used to be steeper - there was a short section of 1 in 16.83,
followed by a short section of 1 in 14.31, then a long section of 15.61
coming up from Pitt Street.  No doubt they used to get a bit of a run-up at
the lower part of the grade, provided traffic allowed this.  Descending to
Castlreagh Street, the grade was 1 in 18.48.
