The IP is restricted to a standard consist during the 5 ringed circus as
platforms are at a premium and Cityrail could not afford to have an extra
platform occupied during the day.
The IP, when departing Sydney during the Olympics is using the
bi-directional signalling to Redfern to prevent tying up Platforms 1 - 4.
When the train is made up with two locos, the lead loco is sitting outside
the signal from Platform 1 and would tie up platforms 1 - 4 for at least 30
minutes which would not be possible during the "Olys".
There have been two double consist IP's this season prior to the Olympics, I
would expect they may start running again after the Olympics.
