AC traction motors are three phase.   To get the three phases, the 25kVAC is
transformed, then rectified, then run through a variable voltage, variable
frequency static inverter.  There would be not much stopping them from changing
the existing pilot motor/resistor or chopper control units to the new system,
but space may be limited.   There is no talk of ACing the Sydney Suburban
system, but if they did, it would make Air Conditioning S sets simpler!
