Yup nearly every city station practically shut down for some peiod that
evening, including Central. Circular Quay was closed quite early in the
eveming, and possibly Town Hall and Wynyard as well.

Soon after the fireworks had finished, Central station went nuts as
thousands of passengers headed home, joining the passengers coming from
Olympic Park. The decision was made to close the station to any further
people and made an announcement for people to assemble at belmore park.

While this was happening they hurridly sent the returning Olympic Park
trains out to various destinations in an attempt to get as many people as
they could out of Central station. These were not timetabled, so signalers
resorted to getting station staff to ask the guard where there train was
going so that routes could be set.
