Another V set was diesel hauled east by a 81 class earlier.  When I 
arrived at Springwood on the 6pm ex central the 81-48 combo were at
ValleyHeights, they followed the 6p service up the hill.  The single 81
with V set came through on the up about the same time as the 81+48 left 
Springwood.  

The signal electrician I spoke to at Springwood said the overhead on 
the up had been damaged by lightning at Hazelbrook.  (He was fixing the 
pedestrian level crossing bells which were ringing continualy as a 
result of lightning damage from the same storm).
