Remember that the cost of living is much higher in the UK.

For example, a sushi roll that you pay $1.60 for in Sydney costs 2 quid
or $5.50 in London; the 15 minute train ride to Heathrow from
Paddington costs 14 quid or $38, compared to a tenner in Sydney for a
similar (well, shorter I admit) journey; and housing costs are probably
2.5 times higher in London than in Sydney.

Nevertheless, it is true that compared to average earnings of less than
20k quid per year, train drivers in the UK on 33k are doing very well.
Average weekly ordinary time earnings in Oz are around $800 (or $41.5k
per year), which is almost exactly what Tezza says the Cityrail drivers
are on, so on this basis the Pommies are streets ahead.

PS, I think we've had this discussion before, a few months back.
