'Donation' is a much better word to use- as a donation is tax-deductable
(and won't attract GST :-) ) 

Donations to non-profit organisations are a good idea in that they do
provide financial assistance towards these people running trains. I'm
not talking about bank-breaking amounts here in anycase. On top
of this it would be excellent for goodwill between motorcader and train
operator. Who knows- you may even get inside info for your consideration 
:-)
