To operate CityRail privately with zero government funding and still deliver
exactly the same level of service with the same number of trains, same
timetables, etc. would require the fares to increase about 200 percent to
achieve full cost-recovery.

We've got people whinging when the fares rise 2 percent, so can you imagine
the uproar if CityRail is ever 'Jeffed' and the fares are jacked up to cover
the expenditure base? 8-)
