While I agree that the XPT is not totally suitable for Melbourne and
Brisbane, there are journeys for which it would be ideal if only
Countrylink ran it properly. 

The HST/XPT is designed for fast sprints over short journeys, not long
hauls stopping all stations. For example, a limited express to Canberra
stopping Campbelltown, Moss Vale and Goulburn only (if the safeworking
between Joppa Jcn and Canberra allowed it). This would have a journey time
somewhere around 3h 40m.
