STEAM FESTIVAL 2000
The Transnet Heritage Foundation, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe and the
Outeniqua Railway Museum will host the third Steam Festival in
Outeniqualand from 18 to 25 September 2000.
The Steam Festival is primarily orientated towards local communities.
Through normal and special train operations, opportunities are
created for both young and old to experience South Africa's steam
heritage. Steam enthusiasts, who love to watch, listen to and
photograph steam locomotives will find numerous opportunities to do
so.
The trains of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe will run as per the summer
timetable though some will be double–headed or hauled by a Garratt,
Class GF locomotive.
(Choo-Tjoe info at
http://www.ru.ac.za/departments/iwr/staff/daf/tt/outen2.html
the Choo-Tjoe runs (at least) 4 steam hauled trains per day, year
round, over a distance of about 60 kilometers)
A number of special trains will also run from 22 to 25 September
2000. These trains will be hauled by different Garratt locomotives of
the Classes GB, GF, GL, GMAM to Mossel Bay and Camfer. The public
will be able to purchase tickets on these trains. A class S2
(0-8-0) locomotive will shunt the George yard during the Steam
Festival.
Tickets on the Outeniqua Choo–Tjoe trains can be purchased at the
Outeniqua Railway Museum ticket office.
