Just what he did - the Herald published his letter this morning - see
http://www.smh.com.au - good work Chris. Although an obvious media beatup
occurred on this occasion, the incident demonstrates that CityRail's
practice of locking people into trains with no means of emergency egress is
fundamentally flawed. The driver and guard did a great job, but they only
had about 80 souls on board. What if the train had 1000 pax on board? How
long would it have taken to get them through the train and get them out of
the guard's door. No doubt it would have been too long for some - the toxic
smoke would have done its job. It doesn't happen on overseas trains, nor
those closer to home eg Brisbane has emergency door releases. That's why
buildings have fire escapes, buses have pop-out windows, planes have
emergency exits and life rafts. But not CityRail trains.
