My last sighting was 1991-1992. Two vans passed through Mortdale on
their way south. There was a car stationed at hurstville until about the
same time

Are the red rattlers wired to run C-C? I know the parcel vans did this.
I know the most (all?) trains post red rattler are not set up to run C-C
are the red rattlers different
