Hi Sean - are you ANOTHER Penrith-based aus.railer?
The set you described - C-T-C,C-T-C - has been in general use for a while
now, and are colloquially known as "pocket rocket's" - since there have been
a large number of cars off for "conversion" to CityDecker's, they have had a
lot more motors than trailers - this was one way of getting them into
service.
