A good idea, though transit sounds a bit American.  How about 
aus.public.transport?

Before one goes ahead with the idea, one should see if there are any
existing Australian public transport mailing lists that could duplicate
the proposed newsgroup.  I know Victoria's Public Transport Users Assn
has a mailing list, but don't know about other groups.
