The leading unit would need to be running (on or off line) for the AC unit to work.
The AC unit can draw as much as 80 amps (far too much to go thru a 27 pin mu cable).
If the relay was bypassed and the A/C run with the unit offline the batteries would
go flat in about an hour.

A trial in the Hunter for fuel saving has lead to a direction that trailing unit be
shut down on empty coalies. In answer to someone elses point about fuel saving,
there would be a large difference in fuel consumption of a 422 offline between
Sydney and Broken Hill.
