This has always been a big bug-bear of mine with Melbourne. I am offended
that they want to charge me to give me information so that I can use a
product of theirs that I pay to use.

To be fair, the Brisbane suburban network is relatively new (from an
electrification viewpoint) - it is just over 20 years old, so they had the
advantage of being able to order all new rolling stock. It is also a much
smaller system than Sydney and Melbourne, requiring much less rolling stock
to provide the services.

Although I agree that Sydney has a bit to answer for - we were still
building non-air-conditioned carriages in the eighties, a time when
Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide were building air-conditioned cars,
although I believe *open to correction here) that there were difficulties
getting the A/C into DD carriages - they managed to get it to work on the
bigger DDIU cars but the smaller suburban cars made it problematic.
