Robert,

4204 is the loco I have modelled.  
The numbers are positioned between the side door and the second porthole
window from the front of the loco with the centre of the numbers in line
with the centre of the porthole.
In the book "NSWGR Diesel Electrics 'The Tuscan Generation'" on pages 4,
5 show the right hand side dated Sept 1968 and page 86 shows the left
hand side dated Aug 1966.
