Some lines have opened in that period too, of course, such as Eastern
Suburbs, Airport Link, and soon to come, Parramatta-Chatswood, but it
would seem that more have closed than opened.

So that means the Sydney network has been expanding (by a net 10 km)
over the past few decades.

What are the equivalent Melbourne figures? In 30 years they lost the
Fitzroy Goods line, the APM siding, some of the North/West Melbourne
grain sidings, Willy Pier, Port and South Melbourne passenger lines (to
light rail), Spencer street goods yards, etc. But they gained the City
loop, lotsa standard gauge track, and wasn't there an extension to the
sparks out past Altona some years back? They also gained and lost Webb
Dock.

What about poor old Hobart? Lost virtually all the branches
(Showgrounds, Cadbury's, EZ?,), all passenger services, double track
cut back to single, the main terminal station and most suburban
stations... can't think of any additional trackage built, apart from
maybe some Macquarie Wharf sidings.

Just goes to show, things change, they come and go, but Tassie ends up
worse off than anyone else (except perhaps New Zealand).

wistfully, James
