I knew Ken Hall (the MMTB engineer who designed it and who rode 1041 all
day too on its first day) and also the first run of 1041 and all its
first-day runs were operated as public services on the 88 (East Preston
-- now much extended to RMIT Bundoora as the 86). And also I was just
there and liked trams and would not have missed such an event -- the
first new tram in Melbourne since 1956 and the first new tram in
Australia since 554 in Brisbane in 1964.

I was born and brought up in Melbourne and only moved to NZ in 1973
after leaving school and going on a working holiday.
