I think if people have pride in who they work for, they'll look after
their uniform. OTOH not wearing a tie should not be a hanging offence,
and anyone who works outdoors should not be forced to wear a tie.

Ties are a health hazard, with one study I heard about showing that
they reduce the average life span by five years. Therefore they're a
Workplace Health & Safety issue. :)

Other than ties, where I work, the uniforms are replaced whenever they
get damaged or worn, as part of the operating budget. I don't wear one
myself (I hate orange :) ) but it's important partly for safety, and
different sections have different uniforms (field vs Stations staff).
It makes it harder for 'impersonators' to run amok where they don't
belong as well :)
