There are (were) 165 members of the 48 class, numbered from 4801 to 48165.
No such thing as a 481 class though (as much as it pains me to agree with
Tezza, who was wrong when he and I were arguing during the Waterfront
dispute, he is right here though). Where it is confusing is that the third
digit in a five digit number *can* mean a different class - as in 421, 422
and 442 class - or it can just mean there were more than 99 members of the
class - as in 44 and 48 classes. If only they had been consistent.
