48100 to 48165 were numbered that way because there were 165 members of the 48
class. The steam tradition was to advance the second number, but the diesel
tradition was to make 5 digits. For example,

5100 was 50 class number 100.
5400 was 53 class number 100.
48100 was 48 class number 100.
44100 was 44 class number 100.

There were some minor variations in the 48 class, including larger fuel tanks
and different traction equipment.

Mark 1 48s were 4801-4845
Mark 2 48s were 4846-4885
Mark 3 48s were 4886-48165
