A question of standards, I guess.

A lot of journalists do use public transport. And a lot of others,
rather than saying its terrible because they found out using their
psychic powers, ring people like the PTUA to ask what its like.

In truth, by world standards (and lets face it, if Auckland was the
benchmark almost anywhere outside the US would be considered to have
excellent public transport) inner Melbourne and Sydney have mediocre
public transport and the outer suburbs of both cities, Melbourne in
particular, have dreadful public transport. Unless you have the good
fortune to live near a rail station in outer areas, you effectively
have no public transport.

Life as a public transport user (that is, without a car) requires
forbearance in the inner suburbs and is simply impossible in outer
areas.
