I now, I was being frivolous.

I believe it dates back to the introduction of the XPT's on the
Brisbane/Murwillumbah runs back in 1990, when loadings rose (as well as the
riff-raff level). They made a decision then to only serve light alcohol, and
it has stuck.

In 1993 when the Melboring XPT was introduced, it was a straight
substitution, rather than a radical timetable rejig, which is what happened
on the North Coast. Perhaps they thought that the loadings would not differ
compared with what they had.

It is basically a hysterical reason (spelling error intentional).
