I think with all the late running of XPTs the question needs to be asked
whether a half hour/forty minute turn around is acceptable at terminals. I
guess in an ideal world there would be enough XPT sets to enable say the ST1
arrival in Melbourne to form the evening service back to Sydney, with the
previous day's daylight service forming the morning service that morning.

I travelled Sydney - Brisbane a few years ago on the XPT and the train was
about 30' late docking at Central for a 1630 departure. They were still
replenishing the train, i.e. stocking the buffet and sleeper whislt we were
underway.

I believe that some funding has been secured to construct some additional
XPT cars (but no XP power cars) to form sets for use on the Griffith and
Broken Hill trains. The cars will be available as spares for the other sets
as well as being hauled by the two 422s on these trains.
