Aus loco discussion mailing list
Thanks to "Tasmanian Rail News" for most of the following information:
All Z & ZA (except ZA4) are still in service, their new numbers are:
Z1-4: 2110 - 2113
ZA1-3: 2114 - 2116
ZA5-6: 2117 - 2118
ZA4 was taken out of service in mid-May 1996 with earth faults - listed as stored at East Tamar on 10/07/1996 and latterly becoming increasingly derelict as parts removed.
ZB4 (ex-2353) Withdrawn late 1989/January 1990 with wheel problems - stored awaiting overhaul. In workshops in mid-January 1991. Re-entered service 26/08/91 but suffered a cab fire in late 11/91 - out of traffic for approx. three weeks. Bogie change in early 05/1992. Engine and bogie change March - May 1994. Loco stored at East Tamar late 04/1995 with engine oil pressure problems but in good condition.
ZB7 (ex-2356) Withdrawn late October 1989 with wheel problems - stored awaiting overhaul. Returned to service late June 1990 after bogie change and repaint. Into workshops again in early Nov.1990 - still there at 04/1991 - later returned to storage in the yard. Steel plates welded over windows and bars over doors for long term storage by 05/1993. Stripped of useful parts and scrapped during June 1998. Not as yet renumbered under the new system but if the loco ever re-enters service, it should become 2130.
ZB11 (not ZB16) suffered its demise on the North East line near Nabowla on the 22/6/1993. Motor and bogies were recoverd for re-use but the carcass left at the derailment site.
ZB16 (ex-2373) was the last of its class to enter AN/Tasrail service on the 22/6/1988. It was also the first out of traffic, in December 1988, after a shunting accident at Boyer early that month, damaged the cab. The entry to service of the ZC's around this period put a question mark over the repair of ZB16 - it was quickly used as a spare parts source. Remains scrapped at Launceston in late March 1993: the first of the class to be cut up.
Ex-QR 1300-1344 were numbered ZC1 to 45 with gaps as not all locos entered Tasmanian service (eventually 33 did so). Those that did enter traffic were re-numbered before service even if they weren't repainted straight away. Those that did not enter service retained their QR numbers. Locos known not to have entered Tasmanian service include:
1301-3, 1311-2, 1317, 1322, 1324, 1329, 1332, 1335, 1339 - (total 12).
With large scale scrapping and disposal, the active class count was down to six by April 1998.
ZC9 - 2140, ZC11 - 2141, ZC16 - 2142, ZC17 - 2143, ZC19 - 2144, ZC20 - 2145. ZC42 was returned to service from storage in October 1998 and re-numbered 2146. Three of these seven (2142/3 & 6) retain the shabby AN green.
