Orange, 22/11/99

Aus loco discussion mailing list

A busy evening in Orange yesterday evening:

8249 / 8164 / 4897 / 48135 / 48128 with an empty ballast to Dubbo,
departed Orange, 1735. Luckily I'd seen a few snippets from the recent
Bathurst car races: this held me in good stead as I weaved through
Orange's evening peak, watching road traffic whilst sighting /
memorising loco numbers. Thank goodness for LARGE PRINT locos.

Train 1877 onto the Parkes line, 1855. I caught a snippet of
conversation with Control on the scanner, and thought it was Eastbound;
rushed trackside, then heard control sight train complete, so thought
I'd missed it. I then broke Railfan Rule #1: "NEVER leave the scene
when a train is in the vicinity", and paid the penalty. As I got home,
I heard it run past, Westbound!!!

8147 / 8110 / 8146 / 6 manildra hoppers / tank / 26 old grain hoppers,
ex West (train 8176), 2028.

48102 / 48145 / 48104 / 6 container flats / 15 tanks, ex Dubbo (train
8136), 2108

NR52 / NR116 / motorail / 22 carriages, WL1 Indian Pacific, west-bound,
departed Orange 2130.

Apart from the "Pizza", or "Turtle", or whatever you like to call NR52,
and the "V/LINE-wannabee" NR116, all were blue boxes. What
unimaginative people ever designed such locos, and worse still, who
picked that colour scheme? Oh, for some Bulldogs, even if they ARE all
green! And what sort of state allocates the same number series to their
trains as they do to their locos?
