Light engines and SM2

I have been told that SM2 had failed near redbank tunnel and was pushed through 
to Moss Vale by an empty wheaty.
Also just been told an 81+48+80+80 combo through Bargo on the down.
Pressumably the 81 for MS2 and possibly 48 to bring dead loco back to town, but 
why the 2x80 class.
