The 'X' class were a case of 'horses for courses'. Track conditions (after the war) and rolling stock drawgear limitations delayed the adoption of more powerful units. OK, mainland 3' 6" systems were able to plump for (slightly) more powerful diesels but none of these worked the miracles that the 'X' class did. They enabled almost the entire system workings to be recast and arguably, were responsible for turning around T.G.R.'s financial situation.
The fact that they did some of their hardest work in the latter days of their 40-odd year careers speaks highly of the original E.E. engineering. Once the 830's were in the state and the big locos had been air-braked, it is also arguable that A.N. worked the 'X' class into the ground - they owed them nothing.
I'd be interested to know what Mike Dix thinks about this latter point.
