RE: EE Locos

Aus loco discussion mailing list

The following is some relavent info from Andrew Dix about the TGR X and Y
locos

X and Y were EM controlled, but with 9 notches which seems to be uncommon.
Among other things, the tram style controllers controlled engine speed by
way of
solenoid valves on the engine governors. Hence Xs and Ys only had three
working
speeds on their engines. If you wanted to play with engine speeds up or
down
from these three you have to manipulate the hand throttle that is on the
side of
the engine governors.

The top plates of the controllers they obtained for the Ys were numbered up
to
notch 12, but in reality they only had 9 notches. Wonder if the controllers
were second hand or just modified to suit the TGR?

By way of extra info, the two Tasrail ZR/ZP class EE locos are now being
used in multi-unit with the EMD locos. This has only been possible because
of rewiring to the 74 volt system and replacing the infinitely variable EE
contollers with notched controllers. There was initially a problem of
compatibility between the three and four pipe system but the two locos have
now been modified to three pipe. Combinations so far noted have been
ZR-DQ-ZP, ZR-QR-ZP and DQ-QR-ZP. They will use the EEs as lead locos in
preference to the EMD because of their better cab environment.
