Loco Speedometers

Aus loco discussion mailing list
82 and 90 class use a new system whereby a hub drive turns a small wheel that has 500 tiny holes. There is an LED and LDR either side of the holes and as the light shines through the holes a signal passes. 500 pulses is one wheel revolution. This signal is then fed into the Dattalogger and the logger has the locomotive wheel diameter pre-programmed. The logger then does a calculation based on wheel revolutions and wheel diameter and it gives a speed output in kph. This signal is then displayed on the logger, drivers speedo and is also fed to the low speed indicator and speedmaster (low speed controller) and EM2000 (on board computer). The radar is used to give the EM2000 a speed signal however it is not effective at speeds below 4 kph so a second input from the datalogger is used at speeds below 4 kph. Hope this makes sense. If anyone would like to know more about it just email me.
Cheers
Bob

Can anyone tell me how loco speedos are operated in Australia.  Are they hub
driven off the axle or driven off the traction motor or do they use a radar
system etc.
Some locos here are having the hub drive removed and replaced by radar
operated speedos, which seem to be far better and not prone to 'going off
the clock" during wheel spin.
It seems strange to be checking around a loco and see the hub drive missing!

cheers
