[Ausloco] EE Questions
I have some more Australian English Electric questions and I'd be grateful for any information or comment that would assist me in getting answers.
QR 1270 Class:
Did all 30 of these have EE 525 traction motors, or did some of the later units have EE 548 traction motors?
Some sources suggest that all 30 had EE 525 motors, but Oberg states in one of his books that 1282 onwards had EE 548 motors with slightly lower gearing, and in another book that the last 18 had improved traction motors.
The data shown in Janes 1969-70 divides the 1270 class into two groups, the 1st of 16, #1270-1281 (sic) and the 2nd of 14, #1282-1299 (sic). The quantities and road numbers don't correspond! These two groups are differentiated only by continuous tractive effort. The 1st tranche are listed as having 41 500 lbf @ 10.3 mile/h, the same as the 1250 class, and the number usually associated with the 1270s, e.g. as in Rod Milne's ARHS Bulletin article.). The 2nd tranche are shown as having 47 500 lbf @ 8.7 mile/h. This would certainly be consistent with their having higher rated traction motors and perhaps a lower gear ratio.
Thus I'm inclined to the view that the 2nd tranche did have EE 548 motors. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Also, which 1270s had dynamic brakes? Oberg states variously that it was the last 6 and the last 18. My initial deduction is that it was probably all the 2nd tranche, whatever size this actually was, but it's also possible that QR was selective in equipping locos with this option.
QR 1300 and 2350 Classes; TGR Z and ZA Classes:
Were any of these locomotives groups equipped with dynamic brakes?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist.
Cheers,
Steve Palmano
