[Ausloco] SA Alcos and GMs

Hi

I just got the latest Catchpoint and there was a comment in the West Coast
photo section, hinting at further motive power changes on the West Coast.
It is difficult for me to see what further could occur. The ASR Whyalla
locos are all too heavy for the Pt Lincoln lines. The NJs' frames are too
light for the ore traffic. So one would assume these locos will have to stay
put. Further, the current allocation of 830s/DAs will have to stay at Pt
Lincoln to supplement the NJs.

Any clues as to what changes could occur ?

Speculation- I understand that the line from Kevin to Thevenard was rebuilt
to a heavier standard for gypsum traffic in the 60s. So could a CK or DE
type work there ? Even if it did, it would be pretty inflexible, being
limited to that section of track. An 830 would be much more use. The only
other locos left in Australia which might be of use on the Pt Lincoln lines
are the 1720 and 48 classes, and I'm not sure that ASR is interested in
buying more.

BTW, it is a pleasure to see Catchpoint giving the Eyre Peninsula the sort
of regular coverage it deserves. Well done to all involved there.

Cheers

Ben
